Small Town Coastal Vacation Turned Meaningful Commissioned Artwork

There are so many aspects to my work that I really enjoy, but THIS has got to be one of the biggest ones. I recently finished a painting commission for a client who shared with me one of her most beloved travel experiences. I am an adventurer at heart and love when I get a chance to travel. My passion for travel is a cornerstone of my business and the art that I create. The world around us is too beautiful to ignore. This art practice is not intrinsic on solely my own travels, but is greatly influenced by your experiences during your travels and the amazing places you have seen.

This custom painting was inspired by the beautiful beaches of Trinidad, California - described by the client as “Heaven on Earth”. After the first time she experienced the wonders that is this enclave of Humboldt County, California, she was hooked and has visited the area every year since. There is a sense of serenity in this small town that is categorized by the warm, breezy air and the irresistible coastline. The pretty constant temperature of 65 degrees is another fantastic draw towards perfect beach days.

The reference photo for the custom painting was taken along a nearby trail overlooking the Trinidad coastline. My client expressed her love for going on this same hike each time she visits and always takes photos. It is absolutely a place of peace. From this height, you can take in the chirps echoing from the seagulls and the slow bob of the buoys bouncing along the ocean waves.

I, personally, have not visited Trinidad, California or California in general! After hearing my client’s experiences in Trinidad, I have added this destination to my on going travel wish list. She shared several photos with me beyond just the one that we ended up choosing for the painting. Every photo I was shown sparked the desire within me to see more! As I plan future trips and eventually make it to California, I will not be overlooking this small town with a big appeal.

I absolutely adore listening to everyone’s travel experiences as they can be some of your most special memories. Also, hearing these memories allows me a little window into what that individual is like and what they enjoy most in life.

How do I create art commissions?

You may be curious about what goes into one of my commissioned paintings. It is important to me that I am able to capture the essence of the destination that I am painting. I love to emphasize colors allowing them to draw on certain emotions. While I enjoy playing around with a little bit of abstraction, I make sure that the finished product stays true to the destination it is inspired by. While I focus on a photo for reference, I ensure to keep the client informed along the way, sending updates throughout the process. For instance, in this painting of Trinidad, California, we chose to omit the tree in the foreground. Some creative liberties can be taken along the way to ensure the painting captures the destination and experience just right.

How can you start an art commission?

Now how do you go about starting an art commission with me? It is simple! Let me lay it out for you with a few steps:

  1. Go out and experience the world around us. This might be going on a vacation, a weekend trip, or a local hike; really anything.

  2. Take photos while you are there!

  3. Send me your photos and share with me the story behind why you love that destination.

  4. Pick out your canvas size. You can find my pricing guide here.

  5. Pay your deposit.

  6. I paint you a beautiful painting that is unique to you and your experiences.

Investing in custom artwork that is true to your experiences is the best souvenir you could gift yourself (or someone you love). If you have any questions about this process, don’t hesitate to contact me and let me know!

I can’t wait to hear about your travels and journeys around this beautiful world and create a stunning work of art that you can cherish for years to come.
