Intro to Nature Drawing: Four-Week Course

Discover the beauty of the natural world through drawing in this 4-week drawing course geared towards beginner-level adults with some drawing experience. Led by artist Ashley Laren, this class will go through drawing fundamentals with graphite, while also teaching techniques on how to capture natural textures, features, and landforms. Participants will gain hands-on practice through guided instruction to help unlock their creative potential in drawing the natural world.

Learn the essentials for drawing with graphite through practicing a variety of techniques that align with the elements of art.
Learn the fundamentals of drawing through guided instruction, drawing exercises, and studying examples of landscape compositions.
Practice observing and drawing still-life compositions featuring plants and natural materials.
Explore concepts of creating a balanced and engaging composition through organization of visual elements.
Study techniques to draw natural textures.
Learn techniques to draw a variety of landforms.
Focus on integrating perspective and scale to create depth in your compositions.
Receive guidance on how to continue and grow your art practice at home while drawing nature.
Painting with Objects: Abstract Art Workshop

This session at Forming Art Studios is geared towards introducing adults to beginner drawing fundamentals – no previous drawing experience necessary! Led by artist Ashley Laren, students will be taught the elements of art while learning how to draw using graphite and related drawing tools. Students will be able to use the supplies provided during class time. During the course, students will use a variety of still life compositions to practice drawing techniques related to shape, line, value, perspective, color, texture, and form.
Over the span of four classes, participants will have hands-on instruction and guidance, and by the end of the course, you’ll have the confidence and tools that you need to continue building on your personal drawing practice. Each session aims to be informative, interactive, and fun guiding you to unlock your creativity.
What Students Will Learn During This Class:
Students will use a variety of everyday objects as references for their drawings throughout the course.
Learn the elements of art and how to apply them to drawing using graphite.
Train the eye to better understand how shapes, value, and perspective relate to each other towards building a composition.
Learn gesture drawing to help study a subject to better understand it in order to improve drawing accuracy.
Understand how light defines form to create three-dimensionality in your drawings.
Learn the basics of perspective and how objects are related to each other in space.
Understand composition and framing in a still life composition.
Apply all learned techniques from the course in a final still life composition assembled by the student.
Students will leave the class feeling more confident in their drawing abilities and will have the tools to continue their art practice on their own.
